Take time out to promote yourself.

Business advice for handymen.

Do you take time-out, a day off to dedicate to promoting yourself?

If you are so busy fulfilling the work orders from week to week, and every day of the week, but never progressing to more than a few weeks of order in advance --- but not taking time-out to open new doors -- then don't be surprised if one day you find yourself with the work drying up!

You have to take time-out to do all the things listed in this section of the Forum.

Talk to people – and they’ll talk about you!

It may sound blindingly obvious but if you don’t talk to people they’ll never know! I’ve already mentioned the waste of time delivering leaflets when you don’t follow up, and this applies equally to those you meet on a daily basis.

Does your local newsagent actually know what you do? Does your postman, milkman, doctor, dentist, kids teachers etc…? If you will talk to them they will talk about you!

Local Media – have you contacted them?

Have you been in touch with your local Newspaper, radio station, editor of the parish magazine. They love a new story and especially when someone is first starting out.

A good idea is to send a press release by email with a good quality photo attachment (except to radio!) with a short press release about your fabulous new community service with discounts for the elderly and disabled!

Make sure you follow up with a phone call asking if they received your message?
