We thought it
might be helpful to paint a picture in words of
the average day in the life of a
handyman
(perhaps we should say "handy person"!). The
concept of what a handyman or handy person is
varies amongst different circles and we are
grateful to our members for their contributions
and hope that you, our valued customers enjoy
reading this humble précis!
Some people see
the handyman as a rather gentle father-like
figure, pottering around fixing small items and
doing various odd jobs and repairs. Others see
them as being more "high level" so to speak,
qualified to fit kitchens and bathrooms, perhaps
plumbing and electrics or some of the heavier
types of DIY such as installing paving, patios
or fencing or to erect a garden shed or chalet.
Yet others, unfortunately it must be said, see
the handy man as the ubiquitous white van man
being unqualified and mostly uneducated. To be
honest we loathe that picture, it's definitely
not the
quality we expect! We do everything in our power to weed
out such individuals, or better still not to let
them join in the first place! We want our
tradesmen to be rated very highly indeed.

We hope you'll be
delighted to find that the teams in our
handyman
directory are companies or individuals with high
skill levels and highly trained staff that work
for both private homes & substantial businesses
- yes on a large scale but, equally importantly,
that they are also not afraid to tackle the
little jobs that major contractors don't want to
do. Let's face it, it's not easy work. It is
often physically demanding and very tiring but
these men and women have a real passion for
their work. |

For some of the smaller operators in the
network such as the sole traders they may
operate at slightly lower levels
concentrating on small
decorating jobs or
putting up shelves, as just two examples,
but none-the-less whatever
home maintenance service they provide
they will take enormous pride in the quality
of their work. If you are simply seeking
some friendly tips or advice it is very
often these people who are happy to spend
the extra time with you and will serve you
best in the knowledge that, although you may
not have a lot of work for them now they
will want to retain you as a valued customer
and serve you over a longer period of time.
After all, a personal touch means a lot in
these days of automation!
So, a day in the life of a handyman can be
very varied. A lot will depend on the type
of work and length of contract (albeit
formal or informal). He or she will almost
certainly be up at the crack of dawn
preparing for the day in much the same way
as the rest of us. However, before he/she
arrives on site they may well have had to do
some preparatory work such as obtaining new
supplies for a building project, perhaps
before even leaving his driveway he may have
needed to be calling or dealing with
planners or architects, especially if the
work entails any modifications such as those
very popular these days with attic, loft or
garage conversions being so frequently
converted for domestic use. A lot will also
depend on whether the handyman has specific
areas of expertise such as landscape
gardening or tree surgery or perhaps tiling
as another example.
